Grad Session Inspiration: Sentimental props for grads
Graduating college is an extraordinary accomplishment that should be celebrated!
This is one of the main reasons I am so passionate about documenting your graduation with grad photos. Grad sessions are a unique opportunity to incorporate little bits of yourself into imagery that you will be able to look back fondly on for years to come. When you have your grad session be sure to do a bit of planning before your actual session date. This can be solo planning or reach out to your photographer for a few tips and ideas!
If you are anything like me, you may have the tendency to be a complete sentimental fool.
This is of course, a good quality that should shine in your grad photos!
Below is a short, but relevant, list of prop and accessory ideas to bring to YOUR grad session:
- A print photo of your first day of kindergarten.
- Alternative to the concept above, bring a photo of your kindergarten graduation.
- All of your textbooks! Yes, all of them! I personally rented a lot of my textbooks in undergrad so you could also check out your textbooks again from the library, or bring one you spent a lot of time with to incorporate into your photos
- Bring your cap and gown! This is one of the easiest props to bring and especially important if you have a custom cap!
- Major themed props – this is one of my favorite things to incorporate into grad photos! In my own grad photos I brought the first film camera that I bought myself! In a recent shoot with a wine studies major he brought wine from the winery he worked with, isn’t that amazing! This prop can be interpreted for every major!
- A fun vintage car (yours or a family members!)
- Family heirlooms. This is especially important for grads who had help from their family members throughout their education time. It can also be interpreted in any way that fits for you. Perhaps you have a photo of a grandparent or parent graduating that you could bring, or their class ring, the possibilities are endless!

I hope you have enjoyed these ideas. If you incorporate any of them into your grad session please share them with me on Instagram, I would love to see them!
