5 Beginner Steps to Building Your Own Personal Brand Style

Personal branding is one of my favorite topics because it is exactly what it sounds like. It is a brand identity built off of your own personal style and aesthetic choices. That being said, it can be hard to narrow down and choose exactly how you want your brand presented. In this piece we will discuss the first five steps I think all brands should take to help define their personal brand.

Refine your color pallet

I am a color person! I love every single color and I try to highlight them all within my photography. That being said, they don’t all fit my brand. When looking at how you showcase your brand you want color that match what you want people to know about you. For example I want to host welcoming, warm and natural spaces and photo sessions so I stick to blues, greens and yellows within my branding. I may have eggshell and papaya like colors here and there, but they are like accessories. Once you know your colors, it is also a great time to do your personal branding photo session. Once your photographer can see the beginning visions, they can help you create supporting images to match.

Find the font for you

Similar to a color pallet, your font is an easy way to define your brand. Think of it this way, is your brand more likely to use a font you might find on a horror film poster or a hallmark film poster? I recommend exploring Canva fonts and choosing two that feel like you. I like to have a “main” font and a “supporting” font that compliment each other.

Figure out what your brand stands for

While it sounds like it, this does not have to be a political stance. Defining what your brand stands for can be able simple as “my brand strive to spread kindness” or as detailed as “my brand stands for equality and works towards it”. However you choose to write what your brand stands for, the act of writing at least three of these will help you as your brand grows and changes. These are something you can come back to as your core values. Knowing this will also help you later create a mission statement and a buyer persona.

Know your content buckets

Content buckets are what you are sharing and posting from your brand. Most brands have four core topics they talk about. Each topic then will have 3 base ideas of conversation. Having more Ethan 6 content buckets is unusual. For example, as a photographer I like to talk about my work, teach photography, share branding knowledge, and talk about my travels. These are more core topics and they are all expandable topics. Each brand should have their own unique topics but education is always a safe starting place. How can your brand help educate your audience?

Establish what you do / what your provide

Not sure what you have to offer yet? No worries! Start with one (is it a service? are you selling an item?) and come back when you grow a bit more. One way to think of this is “How the heck are you going to make this work? How will you obtain funds to reach your goals?” With each and every service you are providing you will want to title the service and write a brief summary to have on hand.
